CNY 2018: Celestial Court, Sheraton Imperial KL

Welcome the Year of the Dog with a sumptuous feast at Celestial Court, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur.

This year, Executive Chinese Chef Ho Boon has specially crafted four Prosperity Set Menus, as well as a selection of premium yee sang and a festive a la carte selection, available from 15 January until 2 March 2018 for both lunch and dinner.

The 9-course set menus, namely Heavenly Treasure (RM2,088 nett), Golden Fortune (RM2,388 nett), Stellar Prosperity (RM2,688 nett) and Golden Prosperity (RM2,888 nett) for table of 10 persons and is inclusive of a bottle of wine and a box of mandarin oranges. Please scroll down to the bottom for the full menus.

Toss to prosperity, wealth and good health and welcome the new year with one of four Yee Sang creations, including the luxurious Prosperity Yee Sang with sliced abalone and yellow fin tuna (RM208 nett for half portion, RM418 nett for whole portion), or with other toppings such as Norwegian salmon, smoked duck and fresh fruits.

We had the pleasure of sampling the Stellar Prosperity Set Menu, which starts with the Prosperity Norwegian Salmon Fish Yee Sang served with crispy shredded treasure, snow pear and plum dressing.  Light and refreshing, a great start to any Chinese New Year meal!

Next, we moved on to something warming, the Braised seafood soup with bamboo pith and asparagus. A thick soup with generous amounts of seafood and I enjoyed the crunchy texture from the bamboo pith and chopped asparagus.

Roast duck is one of Celestial Court's signature dishes and for Chinese New Year, Chef Ho is presenting roasted duck infused with Chinese herbs. The duck is first placed in a Chinese herbal bath for about 4-5 hours, then removed and rinsed. After that, it is blanched with hot water and bathed with a maltose and white vinegar mixture, blown dry for 4 hours and then roasted for 40 minutes.

The laborious steps ensures every duck comes out perfect, with tender, juicy and flavorful meat and ultra crispy skin. A dish that got everyone singing high praises. Loved it! This is also available on the CNY a la carte menu for RM204 nett for a whole duck.

This deluxe vegetable dish features sliced abalone, which has been braised until tender along with dried scallops and lion's mane mushroom served alongside steamed broccoli.

I was happy to see pomfret on the menu, as it is my all-time favorite fish. Here, the white pomfret fish is deep fried and then topped with a sweet and sour sauce (with the special addition of strawberries).

The prawn dish smelt absolutely amazing when it arrived at our table. The tiger king prawn is lightly steamed for a couple of minutes, and then the jus from the prawns is added to a mixture of raw garlic, fried garlic and black vinegar, which is then poured over the prawns and returned to the steamer for a few more minutes. The sauce was super fragrant and delicious!

The Braised five grain rice with diced chicken and conpoy in abalone broth tasted like an Asian version of risotto - lovely and comforting.

The Hot sweetened eight treasures in almond cream was rich and creamy; you will find red dates, gingko, aloe vera, white fungus and snow lotus in your dessert soup. Paired with Deep fried Chinese brown sugar cake (nian gao) for a sweet finish.

  1. Looks like they added some sauce to the duck. Plum sauce? I would rather have it without any kind of sauce.

    1. Hi Arthur. It's the jus from the duck. Plum sauce is served on the side for anyone who wants it.
