Upon arrival, you will be presented with a mi Pad tablet to browse through their a la carte menu and select your dishes. Each dish on the electronic menu comes with an enticing photograph to assist in ordering.
To start, we had the Gyuniku Tataki (RM27) - the beef is quickly seared so that the centre is still nice and raw. The thinly sliced beef is served with a citrus soy sauce, topped with minced garlic and grated ginger. Took our first bite, and wow - I just love how all the flavours came together. So appetizing and delicious!
One of the must-order here is the 3 Taste Mini Chawanmushi (RM22). Not only does it look pretty, the chawanmushi steamed in the hollowed out egg shells are deliciously smooth. The chawanmushi is topped with uni, tobikko and caviar respectively.
For us, a Japanese meal is not complete without some sashimi. And we were absolutely blown away by the Chef Special Sashimi platter (market price). This platter will contain 9 different type of specially selected premium sashimi. During our visit, the seafood featured were kanpachi, salmon belly, shima aji, isaki with caviar, aka hata, kasago with kaiware, uni, botan ebi and live hotate. They were incredibly fresh, I enjoyed savouring all the different taste and textures of the seafood. I especially enjoyed the kanpachi (super thick slab so it was nice and meaty) as well as the live Hokkaido scallops (sweet and tender) and uni (creamy and sweet). Great selection, definitely the highlight of our meal here. :)
Beautiful and artistic presentation
Can't take my eyes off you
Isaki (grunt fish) with caviar - light and delicate
Kasago (marbled rockfish / scorpion fish) with kaiware (daikon sprouts)
Another special off-the menu item that we got to try was the Hokkaido Snow Crab tempura with squid ink. The snow crab legs were coated in a light, crispy batter - lovely and sweet flesh, accentuated by the subtle saltiness from the squid ink.
Maki sushi is one of Ishin's strong suit. On our last visit, we had the dragon roll and loved it... this time, we try another one of their creations, the Unagi Avocado Oshizushi (RM51), also featuring two of our favorite ingredients. Defnitely a must-have for unagi lovers... thick slabs of sticky, sweet grilled unagi sits atop each sushi and is finished off nicely with a creamy avocado centre. Oishii :)
The Maguro Kama Shioyaki (market price) is one of their signature items, and came highly recommended. Tuna jaw or collarbone contains lots of collagen, and when salt-grilled, will allow you to enjoy a smooth, buttery texture and excellent flavours. The skin bits are nice and crispy too. Best eaten hot.
Ishin also offers set lunches in the afternoons, easy on the wallet and still very tasty. Most of the set lunches are priced at RM37. One of our dining companions had the Teppanyaki Set, which comes with seafood teppanyaki, rice, miso soup, pickles and fresh fruit.
End your meal with the raindrop cake (RM8), also known as Mizu Shingen Mochi in Japan. Ishin serves imported raindrop cake, so you can be assured you're getting the real deal here. We love the delicate texture, served with kinako (roasted soybean powder) and thick molasses syrup. Definitely the best version we've tried in KL.
