Restoran Gafan, Taman Connaught, Cheras, KL

Restoran Gafan in Taman Connaught, Cheras is a restaurant specialising in claypot rice. They have a one-page menu, featuring 10 claypot rice dishes, 2 tofu dishes, 4 vegetables and 4 soups. Prices start from RM8 for a small claypot rice. Among the flavours you can choose from are drunken chicken rice, sausage chicken rice, fish rice and prawn rice (scroll down to see full menu).

The rice is cooked to order, so there is about a 15-20 minutes wait once you have placed your order. We ordered the traditional salted fish chicken rice (RM8) and mutton rice (RM12).

The mutton rice is one of their bestsellers. The mutton is sourced from Australia, and is braised with beancurd skin for 2 hours. The meat is flavorful and tender, and I especially like the pieces of radish that they have added in. Raw onions are topped on the rice, but the residual heat cooks it slightly. There are some crispy bits at the bottom of the claypot (the best bit, some say!).Overall, I found this rather tasty though I wouldn't mind a little more sauce on the rice for more flavour.

The crowd favorite is the traditional salted fish chicken rice. The salted fish is served separately in a small saucer. We mixed it into the rice, and it really gives me a nice flavour to the rice. Again, I would have liked it more if there was more sauce.

  5. Here, we typically cook the rice with chicken, chinese sausages, salted fish and vegetables. Although I am not complaining about this combination, I envy you for the many choices you have over there! :D
